Why Use an Insurance Adviser Instead of Buying Direct?

You can buy insurance directly from an insurer, online or over the phone. So why do so many New Zealanders use an adviser instead? Because getting the cover right the first time, and having someone on your side when you claim, can make a big difference.
1. We compare, so you don't have to
When you go direct, you only see one insurer's products. An adviser can compare policies from a range of insurers. At AFA, we work with several of New Zealand's leading life and health insurers, so we can look at definitions, features and price side by side and recommend what fits you best.
2. Cover tailored to your life
Insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. Your mortgage, family, job, health and budget all affect what you need. An adviser looks at the whole picture, including the cover you already have, and builds a plan that balances protection with affordability.
3. Help with the application
Health questions on application forms matter. If something isn't disclosed properly, it could cause problems at claim time. We guide you through the process so your application is complete and accurate, and we deal with the insurer on your behalf.
4. Someone in your corner at claim time
This is where an adviser really earns their keep. Claims usually happen at stressful times: illness, injury or loss. We help you understand what you're entitled to, gather the paperwork, and follow up with the insurer so you can focus on your family.
Did you know? Since 2021, anyone giving financial advice in New Zealand must work under a licensed Financial Advice Provider and follow a Code of Professional Conduct that requires them to put your interests first. You can ask any adviser for their disclosure statement, which explains how they're paid and which insurers they use.
5. Ongoing reviews
Your needs change. A good adviser checks in as your life moves on, so your cover keeps up with a new baby, a new home or a change in income, and you're not paying for cover you no longer need.
Does it cost more to use an adviser?
Usually, no. AFA doesn't charge you a fee for our advice. Like most insurance advisers, we're paid commission by the insurer when a policy is put in place. You'll find the full details, including the insurers we work with, in our adviser disclosure statements linked at the bottom of every page.
Thinking about switching policies?
Be careful with switching. A new policy may not cover conditions you developed under your old one. An adviser should explain the pros and cons clearly, and you should never cancel an existing policy until the new one is confirmed.
